I think if you aren't "hearing" your fabric talk to you that you might need to relax and let the colors tell you what they want. I don't think I've made a quilt that didn't end up differently than my original plan! Fabrics in an overlapping pile can be very different than fabrics that are sewn together. One area screams "look at how dull I am!" while another tells you, "you put too much on me!" Gotta listen!

I'm in two round robins and I depend on those tops to tell me what they want. Some are quite shy and wait a LOOOONG time before they tell me. Others are screaming the ideas as I pull them out of the bag. YES! My projects talk to me and I learned to listen. It usually starts with "what if?" or "how about?"

Hmmm....not sure if my projects talk to me....sometimes fabrics in my stash use telepathy to tell me what kind of quilt they want to be part of, and who they want to join them! I have had fabrics tell me during the interview process that they do not belong in the quilt I am thinking of making. I guess that is kind of talking. I prefer to think of all this as my muse at work! LOL!

Like the above posters, fabrics talk to me when I am choosing them - either at the store or from my stash for a quilt. Then they are silent until they hit the design wall. Lots going on there. Then finally when it's time to FMQ. So mine talk to me three times. The FMQ is the problem - sometimes the top want more than I am capable of.

I was thinking about writing a post about the very same thing! Last year for me was just one of "those" years. I made 2 quilts last year, one quilt was all black and grey - very sombre, but for a reason - I call it my healing quilt, and the other was for one of my dd's to go in her brown lounge room, so all browns with colours in there to lift it a bit - pretty, but not my colours.
Last week, I just felt like making a quilt from a charm square pack that I had started putting together with some wonderful bright and happy colours. Well all I can say is that fabric definitely gets grumpy, fractious and will not play when the colour / pattern is not right and truly sings when just the right mix is found. I've almost finished the latest quilt and every time I look at it........it is definitely singing. Have to be careful who I say all that to, only another quilter could possibly understand, lol. So much on here today that relates to where I'm at. Wonderful place to visit. :0)
