I have not heard of Marteli before, where did you purchase it? Sounds like a life saver to me.

I think we gradually get used to the pressure. I usually change mine when my fingers turn white.

By the way Keepsake quilting has their blades on special again. And there's another site recently posted that has them really inexpensively....slept since then and I can't remember. Harbor tool?

There is very little that I actually throw away. Yeah, I'd like to say frugal but, truth is, I'm cheap.
    Ditto on all counts!

Martelli makes all kinds of quilting gadgets. The rotary cutter is shaped differently than all others so that you hold onto the side and "steer" it with your finger. There are right handed and left handed versions. I got mine in Paducah at the quilt show many years ago. http://www.martellinotions.com/

Many different companies sell their products. Google it or check with your favorite quilting gadget suppliers.

I also believe the Martelli people told me they take back used blades but I don't see that on their website.

I put used blades in a container, wrap the container with tape, and put in regular trash disposal. This bin is ground by the disposal truck. No worry about anyone getting cut.

You may have trouble finding the carpet cutter blades at your Harbor Freight store because quilters are snatching them up. So go to the Harbor Freight website & find their catalog, where they are listed. I just got 11 packages of them for less than $30.00, including shipping. There are 2 to a package & they are sharp, sharp, sharp! Excellent! They have only the 45mm size, however. But I highly recommend them. For that price I can afford to toss them when they get dull. :D

When I change the blade, I take a recipe card and write the date on it. I write "New Blade 4/9/11" and stick it on my bulletin board. You would be surprised how long (too long) you let it go. I change mine with each project and/or 3 mo, unless I get areas that don't cut when I use it. The 5 packs are a great thing to buy with the JoAnn Coupon.

I think I'll chnge it before I start another project, and then i slips my mind. After you do change it you have to be VERY CAREFUL or you'll put too much pressure, and cut something you didn't mean to do(like your finger) LOL
