    Another option is to use a flannel backed vinyl table cloth like you find in the picnic supply section. You can get a large table cloth for a couple of bucks and it sews up great. have used it a lot for diaper bags and water bottle carriers, also for covering that favorite cook book that might get stained by sticky fingers. Wipe-able and pretty water proof...needle holes will dampen and leak if overwhelmed with liquid. You can always sew from the wrong side IE:flannel side with no sticking or dragging.
    I don't like sewing through vinyl as the presser foot drags a lot, even with a teflon foot or tissue paper. If I used the iron on vinyl I always leave a bit of a margin for the seam allowance.
