    My first thoughts, exactly!
Originally, crazy quilts (1890's) were not quilted except along the edges of the blocks to hold the backing in place. I think most were made without any filler except the foundation fabric.

We had to make a crazy quilt block for our block challenge this year. I put the fancy stitches on (by machine) before I put it into the quilt. A friend made her quilt first, then put in the fancy stitching. I wish I had waited. Hers was great and the stitches were showing on the back of the quilt.
