I saw an old posting of yours where you were looking for a log cabin star quilt. (I just found this site.) I have a pattern from Log Cabin Creations, Kalona, Iowa from 1986 for a broken star and shaded broken star quilt. I am considering making it and adding trapunto in the quilting part since I recently took a retreat on how to trapunto. I'm going to have to make some conversions to rotary cutting as this pattern was printed by means of making your own templates.

Where you cut your first section is fine! Just make sure you cut the next and the next, etc. in the same location of the print and you'll be fine. Matching up the print with pins is the time consumming part. But once that's done, you'll be ready to cut your strips, then onto the fun of deciding which way to have the triangles go to make your hex's.
