Help with Easy pattern
My friend and I want to make a quilt using our scraps. She is very new to quilting and I've made a few but there were very basic ones. Do you have a go to pattern when you want a simple quilt using scraps. Also, when making a scrap quilt, or I've seen pictures of string quilts, do you try to keep color value together, design of fabric together? I'm confused as to the layout because some I've seen have definite patterns when they come together. Remember...beginner...please. Thanks

To me the most impressive easy quilt is a disappearing nine patch (D9P). If you always use the same color for the center block, the entire quilt goes together fine. I like controlled scrappies. Either I use all batiks or left overs that go together. If you use random scrap fabrics especially prints, use lots of a solid white or cream to calm the chaos.

Personally, for scrap quilts I like to lay it out on my "design wall" to see it altogether before I start sewing. Then I will pull it off in columns for piecing. My design wall is just a basic white wool blanket, though I've used batting before too (whatever batting I plan to use for the actual quilt so I know it's big enough).

We have pieces as small as 1.5 inches wide and differing in lengths from short pieces to 20 inches long

I saved a picture of a scrap quilt block from Pinterest. I can't post it here because I didn't save the link just the picture. It was made of all 2 X 3-1/2 inch rectangles. It started by sewing 2 of the 3-1/2 inch side together, then 2 X 3-1/2 rectangles were added to the top and bottom and they continued kind of like a log cabin block until they got a block. I am working on a great scrappy from Madquilter right now with 2 X 5 inch pieces so I might do one with the smaller rectangles next.

If your scraps are big enough, go to the Tutorial section of this Board and look at my post called Five Easy Pieces Charity Quilt pattern. Works great with scraps and doesn't get much easier than this pattern!!
