This is my first landscape quilt. It's the view from my cousins house in Chile. I have most of the picture figured out but was wondering about the snow capped volcano's upper portion. It will be off white but should I use separate fabric for the shading? Was thinking of thread painting but I have never attempted that technique. Any advice about anything in the photo would be a help. I am using batiks.

it will make a lovely quilt, my suggeston would be to look for snow caped mountain fabric and do some applique regardless I cant wait to see the finished quilt.
    good luck

I've never done it, but I've seen some really nice crayon 'painting' that looks very realistic that might work for the snow. Search here for it; some of the examples I've seen are here on the board. Just an idea. I like landscape quilts, too, and look forward to seeing yours. I haven't been adventurous enough to try it myself.

if you are using batiks. there are a couple of hoffman watercolor 1895 series that will work for the snow capped mt..

then some thread play to highlight the darker areas would be easier....GREAT one for a beginner..not too much contrast, and REAL nature colors!

have you ever seen the works of the quilted lizard?
here is her landscape gallery page...

WARNING>.....once you see these..you will NEVER look at natural scenery the same again...have fun!

When I do shading in small pieces like that I use colored pencils. You can also use ink, fabric markers, crayons or paint. You don't have to use all fabric, just make it a mixed media quilt. They are fun to do.

Just lovely scenery, the landscape quilt is going to be wonderful. Wouldn't that be nice to see out a window, especially in my house!
