I've used Minkee backing with a cotton pieced top, and used a universal needle...Not sure the ball point would be a great idea on the cotton or the batting if you are using any

I made a quilt for my grandson to take to pre-school for nap time. His older brother was about 6 years old and he helped me. Instead of tying the quilt I chose an embroidery design on my sewing machine and I let the older brother run the sewing machine to "tie" the quilt with the embroidery design. Both of the boys loved the quilt and if it is easy enough for a 6 year old to do than it should be a snap for your granddaughter.
