My largest mat is more than five years old, and if I turn it over, the smell still bothers me. Only a whiff, now, in comparison to what it was in the beginning, but it is there. Can't remember what I did to make the mat usable. Good luck, piecefully, the old one

Take it back to the store. I had one of those mats and couldn't stand the smell. It's not normal

It may get rid of the smells; it will also take of all your ruling lines if you rub it; salt is abrasive. Salt & ice cubes is a great way to clean a glass coffee pot that is all grungy. You toss them in, add the salt (a tablespoon or less will do), swirl it around, and presto! clean decanter.

As for the smell, I find that Odo-Ban, which is only available at Sam's Club (not Wal-Mart), is great for most smells and is a disinfectant, too. You buy it by the gallon concentrate, and dilute with water. Use different solutions for different purposes. It has an aroma that is similar to Old Spice, which I happen to like. I use it for pet smells all the time.
    Your mileage may vary.

Why don't you try Arm and Hammer baking soda wash. It takes out odors out of clothing it should work for the matt.

LOL When I got it and got it in the car I noticed the smell, turned around and went back and asked if I could it exchange it for one that didn't smell so bad and the lady said they all smell. I said "OH NO the shipping truck must have run over a skunk!" Thats when she laughed and said "No they come that way from the company, it'll wear off soon."

It must be the material they use to make them??[/quote]

I know just when I am getting to that section in a fabric store. Can smell them an "aisle" away. Ann

Unfortunately, this is one of the draw-backs of the Olfa cutting mats. However, rest assured that it will eventually go away but might take another 6 months.....

I purchased one recently and had the same problem. I soaked it overnight in the bathtub with half a box of baking soda, the smell was gone by the time it was rinsed off and dried. Hope this helps.
