Unfortunately, it is the chemicals used in the manufacture of the mat - you are smelling those "aromatics+ " and must be one of those "super smeller people" - like me.
Being a member of a family of chemists, I know that errors in mixing can occur. So write the company, get a refund,
and go in search of another brand.

Hanging the mat outdoors in fresh air, in a sheltered place like a porch, using a skirt clip hanger will help a lot, but be prepared to leave it out there a long time - like weeks!

The Container Store in St. L has a wonderful product that takes the smell out of everything I've thrown at it. It's a bag of lava rocks that you never need to replace, so if it doesn't work you can use elsewhere for ever! It's listed on thier web site under odor freshners. They are $10 a bag. Put your mat and a bag of this in a plastic bag and it should absorb the smell. Good luck.

I had a skunk stick up my garage so I asked a smart maintenance man how to get the smell out of the garage. It was really bad. I had to air the garage out in order to back the car out.

The answer is vanilla. Put pure vanilla (not imitation ) in a spray bottle and spray everything with it. It worked and I only had to spray 2 times. Thank you Dave.

Definately try tomato juice. When we all used to get perms all the time you rinsed with juice to remove the strong order and to me this is a similar problem. Good luck

I understand about odors - I have the same problem.

    Good luck!

I recently got one of the Olfa rotating cutting mats. For weeks I was crawling on the floor under my sewing table (which isn't easy at my age) checking the carpet looking for the place my cat had used as the litter box! It wasn't until I moved the cutting next to my machine while I was making crumb blocks that I found the source of the oder!!!! I apologized to the cat. It's still smelling...but not as badly. I did make the mistake of leaving a piece of fabric on the mat for a couple of days...now it smells! I'll be trying all these great suggestions to elimate that smell before I continue trimming blocks on it!

It's been 6 mos now and it still has an odor. I really need to be able to use it now that I know how!!

I'm sensitive to odors and have to leave church sometimes because of strong perfumes but this green cutting mat is going to be the death of me!!!

It's one of the large Olfa ones. Granted the smell is not as strong as it was at first but I can still smell it.
Thanks for any help from anyone.
mine was a fiskars...i called the company and they sent me a replacement.

I agree, you should call the company and ask for their advise. They might send you a new one. Good Luck

Thank You, Thank You Everyone!!!! I picked up the smaller sized blue ones that Wal-Mart carries when I was in there today and it does not have any odor.

You've given me such wonderful suggestions and I will try them. I'm sorry others have the same problem but so glad to know all the information I've learned here.

    Thank you guys again.
