I'm trying to set up my Janome 4800 for machine applique using YLI invisible thread. I am having trouble with the invisible thread being very tight and breaking often. I've tried loosening the top tension and adjusting the pressure dial at 2. Also, each time I sew a 3-4" sample section, I get a line of stitching that looks like the seams that used to be sewed onto pant legs to look like a permanent crease. It is raised and very obvious. I also tried Sulky polyester invisible with even worse results. Can anyone help?

do you have it sitting on your machine spindle? if so try setting on a spindle away from your machine... I haven't tried, but understand that that will help make it more manageable, and consequently stitch quality will improve..... worth a shot.

Yes having the thread on a spindle ( cone holder) away from the machine will help. The thread needs to relax before it goes into the tension discs. If you do not have a cone holder use a coffee cup to set the thread into. I have never had success using the thread holders on the machine , it always seems to wrap around the pin holding the thread, or the hook thing after the tension disk.... this is because the thread had not relaxed at all. The same issue is common with metalic thread.
Also I use a smaller needle size than regular quilting. It can be helpful if you are new to invisable to use regular thread in the bobbin.
I had very similiar experiences when I first started using the invisable thread when it first came out... abandoned it for a few years out of total frustration... then experimented and now I use lots and even in the bobbin.

I use YLI invisible thread and they are absolutely right telling you to stand the cone vertically rather than on a horizontal spool. I use a size 60 needle (if the machine has a needle threader, it will not work with a size 60 needle) and loosen the tension little by little until I find the right setting.

if you are uaing i in the bobbin you have to wind it as slowly as possible to keep it from strething. some machines just don't like this type of thread.

Good luck....I've never managed to use this type of thread without wanting to pull every single hair out of my head. But there are many ladies here that use and love it without any problems. Guess I'm just monofilament thread challenged!

I've never been able to get YLI threads, including invisible, to work happily on my 4800: they jam in the top of the machine. I now use Superior MonoPoly when I need a clear thread : have just done a successful stitch in the ditch with that on top and Superior Masterpiece in the bobbin. The thread broke occasionally, but it didn't keep jamming the way the YLI does. The tension was tricky at first (always is when you show the 4800 a quilt!) but when I changed to a no.11 topstitch needle with the tension at 1.5 and stitch length 2.4, I got very good results.

You can also try a Top Stitching needle. They have a longer grove and a larger eye. Use smallest size needle that the thread will pass through easily. Good Luck

I have the 4000, (and love it), but find I have to be very careful when I thread the invisible stuff to make sure it goes exactly in the right spot. It's easy for it to go to one side or the other. Try rethreading VERY slowly and carefully, and keep the pressor foot UP when you do. Good luck.

I'd have to agree with you. I'm more than ready to pull out my hair. I'm going to try moving the invisible thread off my machine to see if that works.
