How about hand-coloring some quilt labels? Just need a little fabric and some fabric pens...maybe a ruler. All supplies will fit into a shoebox.

When on the road, I embroider tea towels. They come in handy for hostess gifts and don't take up much room.

Yo-yos is my choice as a "small" project for traveling.
When we drive to the cabin in the mountains I take
a small bag that has all the supplies I need, for making
the yo-yos. I have my fabrics already cut, and a little box
that has needles, threader, small scissors, thread also a
few of the Clover wonder clips for binding since I use them
for EVERYTHING including non sewing stuff.

I purchased a small pencil box that has a flap with a snap
and the slide out tray for my supplies.

All good ideas for you. I usually take applique block or two.

One to add would be just color some blocks. Need background fabric and a box of crayolas. You could buy a coloring book if you wanted to trace some pictures or make up your own. Then you can wait to iron them when you get home to heat set. You need freezer paper so the color doesn't transfer.

A friend of mine brought me some fabric from Hawaii - at first look I thought it was a charm pack, but it had over 200 squares and they were different width sizes. Very odd, but it was enough to make a throw, so I just took one at a time and sewed them together into strips, then sewed the strips together. Not very inventive but it kept me busy and I had no idea what else to do with them.

It sounds like you found something to keep you busy - so that is great.
