Thanks so much to those of you who posted your wavy rugs - I don't feel so alone now. I think what I'll do is unsew the rug back to where it still lays flat, iron (not steam press) the strips I take off, and then use my other sewing machine that is set down into a table so that I have a larger surface to keep the rug flat as I sew.

I made one of these rugs and mine did the same thing. I took out 5 rows. My machine is next to a wall and every time I went around, the rug would hang up on the wall and, unknowingly, I was forcing the seams. I have a huge sewing table that I used to quilt my quilts on. I got that out, finished the rug on it, and it looks nice now. You have to keep the rug on a level surface when you are sewing it together; otherwise, you will have a drag which may cause the rippling.

I was at the quilt shop while a class for these was going on. They supported the work in progress with enough quilt bolts to keep them level, and, pressed with best press after every couple rounds. All of the ladies there had good outcomes. they were almost done by the time I got to watch.

Hope all turns out well for you. Please let us know. I've made two rugs. One laid very flat and nice the other one has finally flatten out but to begin with it curled somewhat on the ends. Both were done the same. No idea what caused the problem.

When I made mine I had to press and steam after each round, or it would not lay flat.

Hello! I'm so glad to see this thread! My very first rug is wavy along the sides. I think my mistake was using a Bernina 801 at first. Then about halfway through I realized it really needs to be at least 5.5 zigzag width. My Bernina max is 4. I ordered a Bernette b38 and tried it last night when it arrived. It stitches like a dream and the zigzag is 6.0. I used Best Press every 2-3 rows and it still wants to be wavy. I will probably take someone's advice to wet it and block it. (Thank you!)

I have a pneumatic table but the rug keeps creeping up on the wall so next time I will use the barstool/counter trick to see if it's better.

I have made two of these rugs and what I worry about is some one tripping on them . Neither one of mine lays completely flat but you cannot tell from the picture.
