    Default Help with marking quilts

Hi, I am trying to find a method of marking my quilts so that I can quilt them on my Bernina sewing machine. I have the pounce pad and chalk in white and blue with several stencils. Most of the quilts (16 total for Christmas presents) that I need to finish have a lots of white in them, so using the blue is the most logic choice. Last night I marked half a quilt using the blue pounce pad, by the time I finished a small section, the blue chalk has disappeared, I couldn't see the markings. Is there something else that works better with stencils? Normabeth

I just use the washable Crayola Markers. They always wash out for me, but test on your fabric before using it. I also just mark a little at a time instead of the whole quilt.

I use Frixon pens. They disappear with heat so as soon as you press...marks gone. They are nice and bright too and last until you erase them.

I also use the washable markers and have had no trouble. I once marked the entire quilt and let it sit for a year before I quilted it. No problem washing out. I have used the other brand too -Rose Art I think it's called.

If you want a specific design and can't find a marking method over different fabrics, you could do tissue paper patterns. Stack up several layers of tissue paper and staple or pin the corners together. Mark the design in pencil on the first layer. Use your sewing machine with no thread in it to stitch out the design with a larger stitch length. You will have several copies of the design and you just remove the staples in the corners and pin one layer of tissue to your quilt and stitch through it following the needle holes. The tissue tears away easily.

I use the washable blue markers. I really like them. You can mark the fabric. And then take a damp wash cloth, and the marking disappears

Frixon pen lines also reappear if the quilt is in a cold place. Beware!

Whatever you decide on, make sure that you do a test on a scrap of fabric first. I've had marking tools that work with 90% of my fabric, only to get bit, that for some reason, refused to come out of one particular fabric.

I love the blue line eraser pens and remover. so far it has come out of every fabric I've used it on. it disappears almost immediately when you put the remover on it.

You can get the friction pen marks off by briefly putting quilt in the drier...works for me.
