I don't think you can have too many of the flowers, so I'd make a bunch and then start placing them around. You might find that you would skip one or two spots in each row, but I think that many flowers will look better than fewer flowers.

It will be great and she'll love it. So nice of you to let her decide!

Every time she comes to our house she looks at the quilt on the wall and starts giggling with joy. I told her from the beginning i have many projects started so hers will be ready on time for her B-day in Nov, but when she comes and i see her smile from ear to ear....oh well i dropped the others and started to work on it so i can get it ready by this weekend so it would go in peace to gramyx7 for quilting...lol

Splash them all over. Don't try to make them all the same. This is a darling quilt. You could even put some other shapes and colors in there. Maybe add a bird or butterfly. Example here: http://tiny.cc/q2mu9

I like the idea of adding a butterfly or dragonfly or two or three as well. To me the random arrangement is more visually pleasing especially when viewed from a distance.

Make enough flowers for each set of leaves, maybe a couple extra, and then ask the girlfriend what she thinks! Ask her about the butterflies too. She will love the quilt and you even more!!!

I like the 2 rows, on the left side, in the first picture. The last picture was waaaaaaay too boring.
