Help me learn "Value"
I entered a quilt for the first time in our local quilt show. My goal is to use this as a learning experience.
One comment that was underlined on my Judges comments; was "Issues with Value"
Not sure if this means with the entire quilt or just some of the blocks.
My original goal was a scrappy quilt using fat qtrs that were not my favorite and had no real plan for.
I suspect the 2nd column, the 2 lower blocks are examples of missing value.
The pic is obviously just a portion of the quilt.
Please note: I am not unhappy or questioning the judges comments, at all. Just looking for creative growth.
Am I on the right track?
Thank you for any feedback. Jo

Hrm, well?
When I think I'm questioning the relative 'values' on a block/quilt, I take the picture I have of it, and filter it to be black and white - it's much easier to see where there's contrast or not between pieces. When this (very pretty honestly!) is filtered to black and white...some of the floral outer borders of each square tend to 'blend' with each other...but I guess it's really a matter of what the judges are looking for - I really like your quilt!

If I’m not sure about the value of my fabrics I take a picture in black and white

Judges opinion. It depends on what “ look” you are going for. If you are going for a high contrast quilt then yes, you could have more contrast between the inner square and border. If you are going for a more Bohemian look, then high contrast is not wanted.

Thank you Cheshire Pat! So it's not the dull colors together. Not enough distinction? and I was trying to make sure no two alike colors were neighbors.
If I were to compare my quilt to others at the show I'd say my quilt was rather boring, missing a Wow factor. Could that be a sign of lacking value as well?
Thank you everyone for input. I've dubbed it the Mellow Yellow quilt. I love my quilt, it's perfect for me.
Too, I did take note that the quilts that did well had applique or reverse applique.

Bearisgray, this is where I have/had confusion. My thought process was to assume it didn't apply in a scrappy quilt. Silly, silly me.
Tartan, Yes I love that analogy, Bohemian, the long armer called it eclectic. My goal was simple, to use fat qtrs that I had no real plan for. When all else fails make a scrappy?

When we talk about color value, it is the lightness of a color , relative to another. Value always is a comparison . Take yellow, for example--it looks light compared to navy, but dark compared to white. White next to yellow will be low contrast; navy next to yellow will be high contrast.
The contrast of light and dark helps a design "pop". That's probably what the judges thought your quilt was lacking.
Here's a video I found that does a good job explaining value with crayons and fabric:

The judges comment was an opinion. There should have been explanation so you would know what the assumed problem might be. I suggest you might contact the show committee and ask for a clarification so you will know how to improve. The statement is meaningless.
