I have a quilt that a friend won it is mainly dark blue and obviously the fabric wasn't treated for color fastness before the quilt was constructed. It was on a bed under a leaky roof (RV, I think) and there are two large spots that the blue ran into the surrounding tan and lighter fabrics.

I am a bit afraid to wet the whole thing for fear it will all run together and spoil the whole thing. Has anyone had this happen and what ideas do you'all have to help fix this quilt.

Go buy some Synthropol and wash it. It will suspend any unset dyes in the water and help pull the unset dyes from the other fabrics.

You can also try Shout's Colour Catchers. As long as the quilt hasn't been dried in dryer to set the colour bleed, the colour catchers should work. I've done it to clothing after the colours bled and rewashed with colour catchers, and everything was fine. Good Luck.

i would suggest you use maybe 3 or 4 color catchers since it has already bled so much just to be on the safe side

thanks so much for your suggestions! I have some of the color catchers, but have just used them before cutting fabric, not after something has been sewn and then suffered the "dreaded bleed". I appreciate your expertice and willingness to help.
