I have been quilting for years but have always avoided stars and such that have more than four points in the center. Mine always have a big lump or won't lie flat. What's the secret??

I trim seam fabric at an angle toward center being very careful not to cut into seam stitches, then press seams open. Learned this in a class at LQS.

Thanks so much. I just finished my first star block with 8 points in the center and it laid perfectly flat. I used everybody's advice and am so grateful for you guys taking the time to help me out.
