Help!??? outline of West Virginia
Hi so I decided to make my best friend who has helped me out so much over the last two years. This is my very first quilt and first time sewing since the laundry bag back in Mrs. Courtney’s class in 7th grade 25ish years ago. Not only is it my first time making a quilt but also making a pattern and let me tell you this thing has caused me a lot of stress and a lot of seem ripping. Lol. Yes I know it is far from perfect and non of my corners match. I wanted them to but I had had enough after the yellow fabric alone. Anyway my question is. I want to Applica the outline of West Virginia in the blue center but I don’t want to have another fabric, I just want a thick stitch. Do I just draw the outline on and pick my stitch or is there another process I should or need to take?? Also I’m pretty sure something is very off/ uneven will this work it’s way out when quilting or should I take the time to figure it out now?? 🤦🏽 Ok I can’t post the pic here so look in the comments if I can’t there. 🤷🏽*♀️

Welcome from NJ. For a first quilt with that many pieces and the offsets, I think you did a great job! Are you are planning to machine or hand applique your state outline? Just the outline or a piece of fabric of that shape appliqued? If you are thinking just the outlined shape and using your machine, I would just draw that outline on the fabric, pick your stitch and sew along. If you're planning to hand embroider the outline, same process.
If you are planning to use a piece of fabric for the state shape, I would cut out the shape of the state then use a very light interfacing and sew the interfacing to the right side of the fabric all around the edges. Cut a slit in the interfacing and turn right side out. Press the daylights out of it to make it nice and flat then use a blanket stitch around the entire shape. Depending on how large that piece is, you may need to something decorative in the center and machine stitch that down unless you are planning to quilt over that shape. If that's the case, no need to do any decorative stuff in the center.
Good luck and show us when complete!

Wow. that is very impressive for a first quilt! Your friend will love it!. Choose a contrasting thread color (white?)and just stitch the outline of the state. use chalk or a washaway pen/pencil (but test it on a scrap piece first!) Nice job.
