Default Help outling panel - large wall hanging

I have a large panel - it's a wall hanging (or could be a quilt) and I have it sandwiched and am trying to outline all the picture. The panel is a baby quilt - it is a cartoon type Noah's Ark. I have done applique - using the blanket stitch or zig zag stitch quite a bit and enjoy it but I have never tried to do this straight stitch outlining. Right now I am just using my open toe foot (on my Janome 6600) with my regular settings but I'm having a hard time staying on the line. Should I be using my free motion quilting foot? I love doing applique and don't have any problems but this is driving me crazy. I will include (try to) a picture. How much outling would you do on it?

    Thanks for any suggestions.

I would use the free motion foot. I think you'll have better control. You could also do a more wavy line around it and mimic the wave action

You mentioned using your open toe foot .... are you using your AccuFeed?
If not, you would be best to do so, as that would help with the control.
Then just stitch and turn as necessary .... simplified because you have the knee lift.

The FMQ foot would be perfect ... so long as you feel in control of it, when outlining.
For some, that is more difficult that using a regular foot, and doing the extra work of the turns.

It's a cute panel .. have fun with it!

I would outline as many objects as the batt quilting requirements needs. Some batts can be quilted as much as 8-10 inches apart and others require considerably less quilting distance. I would outline stitch the big features and then FMQ texture in the sky and water.
