I just bought a Sparrow 30 and did a test run. So far, so good. I am going to take it to a group meeting on Thursday and see how it performs. I love how light it is and still has a metal frame.
Here is the link to the store locator: http://www.eversewn.com/storelocator/. It looks like there are a few dealers within 50 miles of Maryland.
You can get a quality machine without the cost of a big name. Look at the Eversewn machines -

They have a store locator on their web site maybe there is something close enough to you to test it out. I just looked at one version today and I'm considering the Sparrow 30, which has the thread cutter. If you don't find it local it is on sale for $399 here:

I have the Pfaff Passport 3, great machine. and I have heard great things about the Eversewn but no personal experience.
I am very leery about the Bernette's, I did a test sew on one at a dealer, within 5 stitches the shaft that holds the needle mechanism fell out.

A vintage Bernina would be a good choice. For really perfect straight stitches on fine fabrics, get the straight stitch plate which has only a small hole rather than the oval one that also accommodates zig zag stitches. You might also be very happy with a vintage Singer, maybe a 201. It was known as the Dressmaker and it handles a wide variety of fabrics. Straight stitch only.
