I just watched a good, FREE mini workshop with Elizabeth Hartman on pieced backs. She simplifies the math. Give it a try.

Wow - your backings look like they could be the front of quilts. Definitely makes them reversible in my house!

I never leave the selvedge edge on any fabric. It shrinks differently than the other fabric. I run a row of stitching about 1/4 in. from the outer edge. This stabilizes the edge and prevents the batting from fraying while you work on it.

However, if it is the outside edge of the backing, that selvedge is being cut off .....
So save yourself the added work of trimming and stitching.
Plus the selvedge edge will be even more stable than the stitched edge.
Once the quilting is done ... then it'll be done and gone and adds to the size of the leftover piece.

As someone said, a seam running perpendicular to the rollers on a LA makes a big bulge on the rollers. Ask me how I know this..... The size of your quilt should fit length or side/side. so that won't be an issue. If the back is extra large and will still fit onthe the machine, I don't mind moving the quilt to one side so a larger piece can be left over. Just need this info up front. Also, If I know the extra is planned for some use, I try to stitch only within the quilt top.
