Default Help please for new Tin Lizzie 18 owner

After A whole day of finally getting my new TL to sew properly, I now am having trouble tying off. Each time I move the machine forward to pull out the top and bobbin thread, the top thread breaks. I sure would appreciate some help.

Are you using cotton thread on the top? If I use cotton thread on top it never fails to break when I try to pull forward to pull up the bobbin thread. AND MY TENSIONS AREN'T TOO TIGHT!!! I have to pull some slack from the top thread then go back & pull up bobbin thread. Cotton thread is good, but I now use polyester, mainly Glide thread & have no problems what so ever!!

Make sure that you bring the presser foot up first!!! I set the tension on mine using this video:

Also, there is a Yahoo group dedicated to TinLizzies.

Thank you so much. The instruction manual never mentions raising the pressure foot. And the advise about the thread type is very helpful also. Is there a particular brand of thread that you like best?

needle has to be in up position and so does the pressure foot.

I use King Tut on top and So fine in bobbin, both from Superior Threads.

The one thing I DO like about my Tin Lizzie is that it will take any thread content & weight I throw at it. Cotton, Poly, Metallic, weights from 40 down to 90. Individual machines, even from the same manufacturer, can be picky. I would get a spool of several different types and see what your machine likes best.
