The different colour tones, placement and scale of print really make a difference in the overall look and impression of the finished piece.
I think Dunster has given some great mock-up examples of how this irish chain pattern can look calmer in design.
Don't get discouraged and just try a few colours together that are closer in value and in a smaller print to get a less busy look.

Here is another variation - but might be busier than what you are looking for... My blog post with other pictures of this Irish Chain are here: http://quiltingcorgis.blogspot.com/2...lt-finish.html. I was inspired by a friend's variation - which used darker colors/patterns in place of the traditional white.
