    Default Help! Red material

I have a quilt top that I embroidered some lighthouses on white material. I bordered it with red. When I was ironing it some of the red came off on the ironing board. I took a piece of red scrap and put it in some water, first without soap and then with, and swished it around - rung it out. No color came out. Can I trust that and leave the red borders or should I change to a different color? I don't want the white squares tinted red. :-)

Sounds like crocking vs. bleeding, but What temp was the water? I think I would sew a scrap of the red & white together and actually wash it to see what happens.

If you leave the red when you finish the quilt wash it with Synthropol and use color catchers.

I think I would wash the red before using it for sure.

Cold. The scrap is still in it. Are you saying maybe it was the heat that made it bleed?

It's already sewn on the quilt top. :-(

Had to look this up. Never heard of it. I'll see if Walmart has it.

I washed a Bear Paw quilt last Saturday, for the first time. The quilt has a white background and each of the bear paw blocks is made with a different red from Moda's Crazy for Red by Minnick & Simpson and one of those reds in the backing. I used four Color Catchers in the wash and while all the Color Catchers came out medium pink . . .not a speck of color transferred to the white background. Yes, I was sweating bullets waiting for the machine to stop LOL.

Thanks for the reminder about Synthrapol. I am working on a bee challenge where we swapped several fabrics and one of them bleeds. I thought I might have to throw the challenge away. With the synthrapol, I may have a chance.
