    My machine did that and it was lint stuck under the plate. Take it apart and dust. Hope that works.

    Thank you everyone for all your replies! I was able to finally get it to sew forward, although I did try to sew backwards - was really difficult. I gave my machine a thorough cleaning and oiling - took it apart and everything and now it hums like it's suppose to.
