    Default Help!!!! Stuck in reverse

I'm in the middle of applicating some letters with a blanket stitch and I'm almost through, but all of a sudden I'm stuck in reverse! I tried to just sew in reverse, but the stitching isn't quite right! It only goes backward on this particular stitch - I can straight sew forward.

    Help!!

I have an older machine that I bought some 30 something years ago from JC Penney - I've never had this problem before.

Turn the machine around and sew backwards.......hehe

    Just kidding

Sounds like something is stuck inside the machine. 30 yrs. old I assume it isn't a computer on board anywhere. Maybe a gear needs lubricating.

Could be the reverse mechanism is stuck and won't let it disengage. Could be lint, threads, or needs oiling to get unstuck.

If you can post make and model, someone may know a bit more about it.

I bought a machine off ebay that had that exact problem. Its at the local dealer now. he said there is a switch broke in my machine - he could take the switch off and then I could only sew forward He is ordering a replacement switch for $25

I hope you find an easier fix

My first machine was a JC Penney machine. I sure loved that machine.

The old oil on those older machines gets gummy. It needs some solvent on the mechanism to dissolve the old, gummy oil.

Yep, sounds like machine needs a professional cleaning.

If you don't want to take it in, then take it apart.....lay you machine on a towel, unscrew the bottom, check for lint, gunk etc. Clean any debris out. Turn the hand wheel slightly toward you to see any obstructions. Is your back stitch a button or lever? You may need to remove the entire cover to see the back stitch mechanism to determine the sticking in reverse. Feed dogs could be gunked up.clean that area. Best wishes to a quick fix.

Google your machine for a possible repair tutorial on You Tube. That's what I did when I got my 401.
