Sounds like it's time for a trip to the repair technician. If you or your husband are fairly handy, you might see if you can find a service manual on the internet somewhere. However, if you need to buy replacement parts, it's possible the technician will only sell them to you if HE/SHE is the one doing the repairs.

I found a service manual here: https://www.scribd.com/document/9493...rvice-Document. You can't read most pages since it's a preview, but one page that was visible was page 28, which deals with the reverse. He can see how it's supposed to work there.

I have a Viking Quilt Designer II that only sews in reverse. The problem is a "step motor" or "stepping motor". It is very pricey to fix on the Quilt Designer so I only use the machine for embroidery.

I had a vintage machine that did that. I had reversed the cords - one for the light and one for the machine. Easy fix on that one.

that is a common problem with that series of machines. They were "self lubricating" and after about 30 years, the lube gets very hard and starts to gum up everything. Serious cleaning involved to get it all out, and then they need to be regularly oiled like any older machines.

Do not try to force anything - they are plastic and it's very easy to break something when they get gummed up. they are great machines, but one of the more difficult to deal with getting to work again because of this.
