I've corrected this mess by just re-threading the machine as you said. I also make it a habit to check the back of my stitching at the end of each line that I sew so that I won't have as much to correct if this happens.

I have had this happen. And I rip it all out because its a mess and I don't know if it will hold up. I don't know what causes this, but my solution has been to just start over. My experience is that it takes less time to start over than to fight with it. I unthread the machine and wind a new bobbin and then rethread and then it works fine. I will be interested to see what others say
