I've always used a darning foot -- and it does just skim the fabric. It keeps the fabric down so that it does not pop up with the needle. I now have a Pfaff and one of the accessories I bought was a book on the feet. It shows all the feet, what they do and how to use them. It has the stitch length, tension info, positioning. I have feet that I use infrequently but love. This way I always know what I'm doing...or at least LOOK like I know what I am doing!

Thank you everyone, for all your help. I think maybe I better plan a trip to the BIG city and just get something official from the Janome Dealer. I just love this site, I have learned so much. I may never be a great guilter, but I sure am having fun.

Try quilting with the darning foot you have before buying anything else. I think if this fits your machine, it may the right foot. I loosen the tension on the presser foot when doing free motion quilting so the darning foot doesn't apply pressure to the foot. I would try it first.

Hi all you wonderful and helpful Quilters, I tried this foot I bought on line again as suggested and duh, it really does work, I just needed to sew with it, not just put in on and look at it. So one step closer to free motion quilting, now lots of ;practice.Thank you all so much. nancy
