Ever since I made it a habit to have the needle in the down position before quilting, I have had no thread nests.
However, tension control is an important part of avoiding thread nests, too. I use Jamie Wallen's method to make sure the bobbin tension is correct. After that, I adjust the top tension. I do all my quilting on my mid arm, so it is a habit to check the tension every time I change the threads.

I had a similar problem and it was driving me crazy (crazier??!). I got a very powerful flashlight and down in the bobbin case area was a tiny piece of thread caught in the mechanism. Tweezers pulled it out and no more nests!!!! Amazing how something so tiny could cause so much frustration.

That happened to me with my brother machine last year. It turned out to be a piece of thread that was stuck in the upper part of the machine! I guess the thread broke when I was embroidering, and a piece stayed inside the machine. Once it was out, everything worked perfectly again.
