I agree with dunster-- no sashing. Use outer borders to make the quilt larger and tie it together optically if you would like to do that. The blocks would look best right next to each other By the way the fabric choices look great!

The white has a summer look to it.
The blue has an all year round look.
Love it!

I love the blue!! I'm wondering if the blue on the bed is more "dull" than in the blocks - maybe if it were more brighter-ish like the blue in the blocks it would click for you. Either way - I think it will be a gorgeous quilt!!!

Your blocks look great! Trust me, I am new too, and my first quilt top is not the greatest, because I was not always able to line up the points. Yours looks way better than mine. But even though mine is slightly off kilter in certain areas... The one saving grace is that I used pretty fabric. :) It seems to hide the imperfections quite well.
You chose very nice fabric that looks great together. The soft blue would look great for the sashing.
I would never donate my first attempts at quilting. I think no matter what, you will be very pleased with it once you are done. There is something to be said for accomplishing a task that is time consuming and not easy to do on the first try.

No such thing as an ugly quilt - love the white sashing as it reminds me of a fifty cent quilt I own; I call it the fifty cent because I purchased a raffle ticket for for that price and won the quilt that was given as the prize.
