Help w/boy quilts colors
Making quilts for Project Linus and having a blast playing with new blocks and my stash. BUT it seems to me most of my quilts are having a girlie theme. Using lots of basic colors. Even the prints I'm using are bright. So if you were making quilts for boys, especially preteen, what colors would you choose? To me dark colors are depressing but that's my opinion. Only color combination that keeps coming up is red, white, blue. I guess my stash is girlie cuz I raised two boys...lol

I have been cutting colorful strips for a scrappy quilt for DH’s fifteen year old grandson and I am using a medium gray for the background and sashing. The pattern is from Amanda Nyberg’s book No Scrap Left Behind. I think gray can be used with all sorts of colors as long as they are not florals. I typically use a variety of blues, teal, and gray/charcoal.

The pre-teen or teenage years for a boy quilt are often difficult. Black/white/gray is always an option. However, I've also learned that quilts made from one color family is a scrappy quilt often works wonders. I've been doing Project Linus quilts for about 6 years now. Maybe time to slowly invest in some guy colors.

Great advice. What I often think when I think men/boy colors end up being dark. They like bright colors just like women/girls do. Brights are fine, just not too much pink. I often substitute orange for pink as a warm tone.

Boys like bright colors too. I have 3 grandsons and they all like a full range of colors. I make PL quilts too I make quilts with all colors and even toss in a few pastels, pink, purple, light greens and blues from time to time to add interest. It all depends on the pattern. I tend to lean to scraps from my green bin and my blue bin which is everything from lights to deep colors. I have made several in the brown/gold/tan color way. To keep the blues or green for that matter a splash of yellow or turquoise makes them fun and keeps the quilt creation interesting for me too. I do try to avoid large floral prints. But use lots of animal prints, black and white, sports and the like. All just stuff from stash.
