Help w pattern
I bought a pattern named Circle of Friends: A Sampler Quilt by Lori Smith from From my heart to Your Hands. The appliqué is not a problem. I am really strumped on the blocks. One block starts with cutting a 2"sq on the diagonal. I bought 3 packs of 5" sqs. I don't know what the problem is but I can't wrap my head about the cutting directions. I want to make the pieces bigger and then cut down. I am rambling and that is where my mind is. Any help pointing me in the right direction?

I took a look at a picture of the quilt on Pinterest and it looks like you would be making 1 1/2" HST's. How big are the quilt blocks? There are certainly easier and better ways to make HST's. What size is the unit supposed to be?

I looked up the pattern, and it's not one I own, so I can't read the instructions and help you. But since it's a sampler, I would suggest starting with a different block, instead of the one that has you stumped. Maybe as you proceed, the instructions on this one will become clear to you. If not, perhaps someone here who has the pattern will respond. You could also try to contact Lori. I have met her at her booth at a major quilt show, and think she would be willing to help you.

Their website says the blocks finish at 4 1/2", but I am not sure if they mean after trimming to size, or after putting into the quilt. Whether the HSTs are 1 1/2" will depend on that. You have the instructions so will know this.
If interested in trying this method, using only 1/8" seams, you may be able to make 16 HSTs of 1 1/2" from 2 - 5" squares, but there should not be any trimming. Hope you can follow the chart - I would test it on scrap fabric first.

If all else fails, I suggest you take colored paper and follow what you think the directions say, taping the pieces together to see if the block will come out as the picture shows. When it says to sew a seam, you can either turn the 1/4 under on each side or cut it off. The tape will hold it together. If you don't have colored paper, then use white and just write the color name on it.
Good luck with that beautiful quilt.

You all have great ideas. Gay, I really like your idea. I don't think I have seen it before. I am just finishing up Orphan Train and we made the blocks bigger and trimmed them down. Some pieces were 3/4", so maybe that is why I am stuck. I am going to try all your ideas. The first one, to start with a different block. Thanks again. You all are a wealth of information.
