    Color the designs with crayons and heat set them. Would be a longer term project but doable. I think it depends on how much time and effort you wish to put into a "free" piece.

    I like some color too, so I understand wanting the quilt to shine a bit more. You could literally machine applique any focus fabric, especially if it has single items or animals or even make a neat sunburst effect with a larger rounded piece somewhere on the fabric and then explode out with rays. This is an embroidery piece for an idea.
    or adapt something similar to this embroidery sun.
