I tried removing the lime green pieces and this is how it looks now. Doesn't seem much better to me. Can anyone suggest why I'm not getting the wonky look that's in the blue quilt?

I agree with this....and I don't think the blue quilt has a wonky look to the blocks.....maybe a little bit from the way it is hanging but the quilt itself doesn't look wonky to me.

There are several prints in the blue one that tie the dark blue and the white together. Do you have any green and white prints that might work. The blue quilt has very few solid-color fabrics in it. You seem to have quite a few, or at least they read solid to me.

I think it looks great now! Sew that puppy together and quilt it up!

My guess from looking at the two of them is that the blue one uses different blues, but they are all related by the shade of color, your green has all shades and tones of green. When I try to do something like that, I head to the paint store to get sample strips so I can color check each fabric (green) against the color tone. If there is a screaming difference, the fabric goes back into storage for another project.
You have blue-tone and yellow-tone greens, so they appear to fight. I would chose one or the other in light to dark.

I see a big improvement from first picture to second.

One fabric is glaring at me--the yellowish green batik in the 3rd row-3 over. Try removing that one and replacing with a light bordered block.

It seems you've changed the quilt from reading green to reading blue.

Oh goodness, your second layout looks great to me. I really like it and wouldn't change it at all.

Good improvement. I think that maybe you need a few more blocks with white on the outer frame. In the blue quilt, there are lots with white frames, and I think many of your shades of green don't have quite enough contrast and you need a little more white dispersed around.

I would add more green in to balance it out. Save the other squares for another project.
