Default Help! Wrong size on Craftsy BOM 1st block

The first block on Craftsy free BOM is a log cabin. I have never done one before. I have been quilting since 1992. Tell me where I went wrong. The middle was 2 1/2". The next two sides were 1 1/2". The last two sides were 2 1/2". I bought a ruler that gives you a scant 1/4". So I am doing a scant 1/4" for sure. It's suppose to end up being 6 1/2". Mine ended up being 5 1/2". Where did I go wrong?? Any ideas? I followed the directions. Help!

Perhaps the 1 1/2" sides wound up on the 2 1/2" side? I am not sure.

Looks to me as if you stopped too soon. Don't you need to add two more of the 1 1/2" strips to the block? (This based on a quick look at the website photo.)

The piecing order on that particular block, as presented, is a kinda funky.
So don't feel too bad if you got a bit messed up.
(Mind you, I didn't see the instructions, just looking at the pic of the pieced block.)

On a traditional regulare LC block, you continue adding logs in a clockwise (or counter) for the entire block.
    Here, you sort of backtrack.

I think maybe they did it that way to avoid having bulky seams when the blocks are joined.

So it's the center, white1, white2, (and then instead of a short pink continuing in the same direction, you goback to the other side of the center) for the short pink, then it continues normally again, long pink, white3, white4.

    Like I said, funky.

Prism 99 is right there are 4 log B's on the right side of the center block. In other words, there are 3 log C's and 4 log B's.

If you go to the materials list, you can download the January block pattern and see a picture of it. It might help:

I don't see anything "different" about it. It's being constructed counter-clockwise. I think that's the way I usually do it. You add B,B,C,C,B,B with B's being 1.5" and C's being 2.5". You just missed the last two B's. Did you download the instructions? They tell you the size of the block after each log is added. Personally, I prefer Judy Martin's method of doing log cabin, pre-cutting the strips to the right length.

Mine have come out wrong too and I'm not figuring it out! The first one is almost 1/4" short while the second one (after changing feet and checking needle position) is almost 3/8" short?! I'm glad to see I'm not the only one! Going to try again...

You have to sew a 1.5" strip to the side of the center square which makes it a rectangular unit. Then you add 1.5" to that side and 2.5" to the other side. If you do the math (minus seam allowance) 2+1+1+2 = 6 which would make it 6.5 with seam allowance. I suspect you didn't sew that first 1.5" strip to the side of the center square.
