A friend just told me she paid $10 and said she would rather pay me if I wanted the job. I hate to hem, but have to think about it.

You are right, it does take away from my quilting time. I really don't like to hem pants either but someone that I work with ask me if I would hem her grandaughters 4 pairs of pants that she got for Christmas.
I wouldn't do it. It always starts with "Could you do me a favor and hem these?" Then you end up their personal seamstress for nothing. There are dry cleaners that have employees that spend their day doing hemming and alterations.

Wow, I must be doing them way to cheap; cuz I charge $5 per pair. Most standard alterations, I just charge $5.

lol!!! That's too funny you said that. I have a bag of pants for my daughter that she needed hemmed, they are still sitting in the bag next to my sewing machine, getting in my way. I ended up getting her new pants. I HATE hemming. Once in a while I will do it, but it has to be a necessity.

Ok this is time for tough love.

While at work a co worker came up to a fellow quilter and ask her how much she charged to hem a pr of pants and her reply was her machine doesn't do clothes. They responded do you need a special machine for clothes?, her reply ,at my house you do!
