If you have a receipt/invoice for the amount you would charge a customer, UPS will accept this as the value of your handmade item. I dealt with a claim for a customer's hand painted china platter which they had not purchased additional insurance for. The invoice was hand written on a generic sales slip and just stated 'hand painted platter' and the price (more than $100 BTW). We were able to get the customer the $100 claim refund. The fact that our store had very few claims apparently entered into the decision to grant the claim according to one of the customer service reps I talked to!
