I have a home office in my room and it is my sewing room as well. I have a few tubs of fabric under my desk etc. I feel more comfortable with my fabric all around me. It give me inspiration to finish my other work fast so that I can sew sew sew. So even though I have my fabric in tubs it is near me (Ha)

Buy yards and they can be any size you want. Fat quarters to me are practically worthless. Jelly Rolls and charm squares are OK if you have an idea to use them.

When i go in to a quilt shop, i look for a fabric I love. If I find one, I buy 3 yards.
I wait for fat quarters to go on sale and buy a couple of each.
    I yard sale.
If I fall out with a fabric, I make pillowcases with it for gifts.

    Hi, GrannyPat!
Thanks for the information on how you get your stash. Could you please explain to me what charms, layer cakes, fat quarters and the other terms mean? Thank you!

    Hi, Kathy!
Thanks for your suggestion about local thrift stores. It sounds like a good one!

    Hi, Rose!
Thanks for your suggestion about buying yardage. What kind of material do you buy? Do you pre-wash it? What are fat quarters?

I agree with the thought it depends on like, love or OMG gotta have it. I buy fat quarters, yards or 3 yards.....it is no problem to build a stash - only to keep sewing fast enough to use up fabric so it doesn't cover every room!

I've started buying 1/3 of a yd. if I don't think I'll ever use a lot of the fabric. A lot of times, FQs cost way more per yd. than just buying a fraction of a yd. would, esp. if there's a good sale going on. Also, with FQs, there's a limited amount of stuff I can cut out.
