Smile How can I make a back of a quilt waterproof?

Hi All, I was asked to make a cotton quilt that can be washed and dried with a backing that would prevent liquid from going onto a couch for a disabled person. She knows they have throwaway mats that you can buy but she is asking specifically for a quilt. The quilt part I can do but not sure what backing I could use. I don't think PUL can be washed and dried a lot.

Thanks for any ideas from this wonderful community where I have learned so much.

There are products that you can spray onto fabric to make them waterproof. However, when you quilt the fabric and sew holes in it, I think it would allow the water to go through the holes. So maybe you'd have to waterproof the quilt after it was quilted.

Just do a Google or Amazon search for ""spray to make fabric waterproof."

I use this for back of placemats and it works great. Machine washable in cool water.

Since this is going to be on the back of a mat for a couch you could use outdoor fabric, it would be more durable than cotton backing and hold up longer from friction, and waterproof. Also Scotchgard makes a waterproof spray, I buy mine at Lowe's that you could use, when dry it is entirely odorless.

My first thought was like quiltedsunshine said "when you quilt the fabric and sew holes in it."

I was under PUL is what is used for diaper covers that would require lots of washing. I see there is a layer of PUL in the Amazon pads. Something to note is while the top is quilted, the bottom is not.

Heartfelt thanks to Onebyone for the information about HeatnBond liquid vinyl. So many uses! Purses, carry on bags, upholstered bar stools, even boat covers. And they sell it as an iron on roll, too.

I've use those bed pads for my husband and they were great. Just throw in the washing machine/dryer and they are good to go.

I used to make cloth diaper covers using PUL. You have to use polyester thread, as cotton thread would wick the liquid out.
After sewing, you wash and dry the item on high heat which closes up the little holes.
