How can I use these blocks?

A true shadow box quilt will not have the "shadow" fabric going the full length and width of the focus fabric. The shadow fabric needs to have a square of background fabric sewn on the end to give the 3d effect. I can't tell by the photos but if you sew the black strips you have to the opposite side of each block will they be squares or still rectangles. If they become squares, then I suspect the pattern the original piecer had in mind was this one that barnbum made a while back:

I'm working on my second Illusion quilt. The Illusion has a white square on the bottom of the black. Then a black strip with a white square would be sewn across the top. The blocks are then put together with white sashing. This gives the illusion.

"Creativity"
I received about 60 blocks. They are all like the ones shown below. I don't know what the former owner had planned for them. What pattern could I use? I was also given more of the black fabric and also white fabric that has been cut into strips a little over 1.5" wide.
Any help is appreciated.
