Is there any rule of thumb in choosing a fabric for a particular pattern,Let's say you see a fabric that you like ,but have no idea what pattern the material would look good in.and if you buy it hoping to find a pattern how many yard should you buy?

When I find a fabric I really like, I usually buy 3 - 5 yds because I know it won't be there the next time to get more. I have even bought bolts of fabrics I really, really liked. Excessive, probably...but, I hate running out of fabric once I find a pattern.

I never know what pattern I'm going to use, and I never know how much fabric to buy!

I look for a pattern I like first, and then buy fabric to fit into that color scheme floating around in my head. If I were to buy fabric first, then you can be sure that I wouldn't have enuf or it wouldn't match what I had in mind.

If I find a fabric I love, I will buy as much as I can afford of it then find a pattern for it. I try hard to go to the fabric store only when I have a pattern in mind so that doesn't happen. Of course I am in real trouble when I do that plus find another fabric I can't live without....

    :)

If I find a fabric I absolutely LOVE, I will buy atleast 3 yards. I can always find a pattern somewhere, but not necessarily the fabric again :D:D:D
