Log cabin is a great pattern - more than just a basic 9 patch, but not any more difficult to do.
When I've done them for my daughter, I've let her choose the pattern. Well, I give her about 5 to pick from that I know are within my abilities, then go from there.

i bookmarked 5 or so and tried to have her pick :D she wants them all :shock:
