How did you learn how to quilt?

Grandmother quilted and I "helped" by cutting squares and triangles for her. Later I made baby quilts for my four sons, but I never got serious until years and years later - I broke BOTH legs and was confined. I got hooked on Alex Anderson's TV show, I vidiotaped all the shows and soaked up all that knowledge from some of the best quilt teachers around. The rest is history.

I got hooked about quilts when my mother was alive and quilting. She passed away and I have all her quilts. I started quilting myself after she was gone about 4 years. I was home sick from work and was channel surfing and ran across the "Quilt in A Day" TV show. Got the biggest kick out of Eleanor Burns.."Step on the Gas"! Bought her "Trip Around The World" book and it's history from there. I did put quilting away for a few years because we added a bed to my sewing room and I just couldn't sew.. Had no room to move. Last year I told my DH that I wanted to get back into it again. We cleaned the room out, moved things around and I've made 6 quilts, have 2 tops completed and I'm working on a King Size QAYG wedding present for my Bosses daughter. (That's almost done.)

My mother taught me when I was really young. I have been doing it for a really long time now. Not many people in our family quilt..let alone sew, but they all appreciate it and the work that goes into it.

But I learned from my aunt, books, and several classes at my LQS

Made my first quilt back in the 70's...mostly self taught...and a class when I was in the Embroiderer's Guild just peaked my love for quilting even more. Since then I continue to be mostly self taught, but every once in a while will take a class from a national teacher at our guild.

I'm still trying to learn. Haven't graduated from making quilt tops to actually quilting yet. But, I'm learned most everything from books, internet - especially this board, a coworker who quilts, and lots of trial and error!
