If you can be organised and methodical you'll be fine. The one challenge I found was getting my graded shading right with the fabrics I was picking. A great tip is to take a black and white photo (use your phone) of your selection and you will be able to see very clearly whether you have got your "shading order" correct. I faffed around for weeks trying to get my colour selection finalised but was getting terribly frustrated, confused and distracted by all the colour. Once I took a black and white photo of my fabrics I was able to very quickly select and arrange my shading and then it was all fun!

I have made one wall hanging using bargello. It was a lot of fun but you need to stay organized with little notes on the strips. I used the online pattern from Northcott. However! The pattern says to always stitch from the same end. At the time I wondered about that--does it end up with a curve? Yes, it does! Toward the end it was curving significantly. I haven't tried another but will alternate where I begin each row to see if it comes out better.

I would recommend going to Quiltville.com and making Bonnie Hunters scrappy bargello first. Her directions are easy to follow. I couldn't believe how simple it was after doing that. They just look hard.

I have made only 2, but have loved every minute of doing those quilts. If you can read, you can make. Don't try to make it harder than it really is. Cut your strips, sew them together, and then follow how wide each is to be cut, and sew together as you cut. Be prepared to rip and sew because that is how you get your design. I Made Derek Lockwood's Illusion first and then went to Eileen Wright's book for the second one.

Try this one. She explains it clearly. I made one years ago; it was fun. You've inspired me to try another.

There are tutorials available on you tube. Bargellos are really simple if you don't think about how difficult they look. It does help to have a design wall or bed where you can lay out your columns (I think in terms of columns and rows like a spreadsheet) to double check before you sew the columns together.

I found the hardest part was picking the fabrics. Took days of auditioning different pieces from the stash. Sewing and cutting was a breeze after that.

My very first pieced quilt (16 years ago!) was a bargello Heart. I remember thinking "What was I thinking?" and I almost quit. But I persevered and it turned out well. It was difficult, but I have done a few more and enjoy them.

Tudey - a bargello heart for a first project? Wow! You believe in jumping into the deep end, don't you? LOL I bet it looks great and you learned a lot. Glad you persevered! Do you have any photos to share?

    Everyone - beautiful quilts!
