I choose by what thread I am using to quilt the quilt.
But I am with you. Use your left over fabrics from the front. Make it fun and not show the dirt.
Muslin is wonderful for a backing on a quilt that is on the spare bedroom bed.

The cat DOES go great with the quilt! Nice touch!
And the train fabric will be nice for the backing. More interesting for a child to look at than the solid. Sometimes kids enjoy trying to find where a pattern repeats.

Muslin was the backing of choice for hand quilting quilts. It is easy to hand quilt through and if you do all that work hand quilting, you want your stitching to show. Some judges of competition quilts prefer muslin because they can see all your mistakes better. If you are machine quilting or it is not for competition, use the train fabric for the back. A busy back can hide a multitude of sins. It also is more interesting for a child's quilt (reversible) and as someone else mentioned, it hides the dirt. The quality of muslin has also declined and it is getting hard to find the "good stuff" for backing. Great quilt top!

Beautiful quilt! Definitely used a darker (than muslin) patterned fabric as a backing. I thought the backing had to be white on my first quilt...what a PITA! The longarm quilter I sent it to had "tension issues" and the back of the quilt looks awful (so bad that she didn't charge me for the quilting). I have NEVER used a white backing on a quilt since. I will use white as a backing on a white wholecloth quilt, but only there, not on any other quilt. The busier the pattern of the backing material, the easier it is to hide if you have any problems with the quilting AND it will hide baby drool better too!!!

Thank you so much!! I had a feeling I should use the train fabric but wanted a more experienced opinion. ;) I had a lot of fun with this quilt and hope I don't ruin it with my first attempts at quilting! lol
Unfortunately for my nephew, the cat stays with me. ;)
