    You are talking about fabric and thread "painting" aren't you? Or are you going to do it in little squares?

    Marilyn Belford teaches this technique on Quilt University. She is a fantastic teacher and the classes are online and relatively inexpensive.

    If you don't want "hard" edges, I agree with amma. Do raw edge applique and add shading with thread play.

    I found these videos a while back about using applique and fusible to make a photo quilt.

    They use an animal photo but the same concept would work for any photo!

    These also offer step by step printed instruction, just click on menu in thhe lower right corner and step by step should show up, make sure pop up blocker is off and you should be able to get the instructions for later reference. great site
