I did consider the FG option, but I didn't want that seam in half my triangles. It seems like the math would be the same, but it's the triangles that are throwing me off. I want my triangles to finish 6" on the long side and 3" high. Can I just cut squares 6.5", then cut them both ways diagonally? Why is this giving me such problems? If I ever do another medallion quilt every square inch will be planned before I cut the first thread!

maybe make a border that you know is larger and use a 'floater' border to fill the gap? Off to see if I still have a border book I used to own....

My EQ7 tells me to cut squares of 7 1/4" cut twice diagonally.
Otherwise, try drawing a rectangle 3x6, then a line from the bottom corners to the middle of the top line. Draw another line 1/4" around the triangle, which is the cutting line.
The math should be one 90 and two 45 degree angles.

Gay has the right numbers and the good strategy for figuring it out via drawing. Mathematically , the exact size to make the square is 7.2071 inches, but for real world utility, it's best to round that to 7.25 inches and then trim them down a bit after they are sewn. (If you you sew an exact .25 inch seam, the triangle will be a tiny bit less than 2 mm larger than the intended 6 inches.) Or maybe just let them be the tiny bit larger than 6 inches.

Thank you for doing the research to identify this border and find the link. I love this border and immediately downloaded the pattern.
