How do I preserve these blocks and make a top from them?

I use to get uneven blocks in block exchange ALL the time. I would sew oversize triangles on all fours sides and then trim them all down to the same size. You could use a variety of solid fabrics in the color of reproduction prints. I drew this small quilt on EQ7.

My dad found 14 blocks that my grandma had hand embroidered. They were very old and musty. I soaked them in Biz and then washed them by hand. They came out beautifully. I think if you wash these blocks, then trim them to the same size. I would wash them before I used them because if they are to fragile to survive a washing, I would not put them in a quilt. My quilt is on the frame right now and I am hand quilting it. It will be beautiful when it is done.
